For the illy Art Collection Cups, Hatoum used an abstract design of the reticulated pattern of the Arabic headscarf and olive leaves, which have historically been associated with labour struggles and the rallying of people, giving a new dimension to a 100% Arabica coffee cup. Mona Hatoum was born in Beirut to a Palestinian family in 1952. She lives in London and Berlin. Hatoum questions the movements of surrealism and minimalism, creating work that explores the conflicts and contradictions of our world.
