SHAPES, COLORS AND INSPIRATION
A variety of typical forms of the artist’s work were collected and used in this illy Art Collection Cups collection. Inspired by different places and cultures, Pascale Marthine Tayou’s art is a colorful, vibrant tribute to a life full of fresh possibilities. The objects, sculptures, installations, drawings and videos the artist produces all share a common thread: they present a person traversing the world and exploring the question of global space. In this context Pascale Marthine Tayou examines his African origins and the expectations associated with them.
Born in Nkongsamba, Cameroon in 1966, he now lives and works in Ghent, Belgium and Yaounde, Cameroon. His work is characterized by enormous variability: it is mobile, heterogeneous, breaking away from predetermined patterns. Beginning with changing his name to the feminine version, the artist embraced duality as a means to avoid identification and definition. His work is always closely related to the idea of travel and contact with that which is different from oneself.
